Abstract

Literature is a reflection of the society at a given period of history. The present study looks into the question of leadership in African countries as depicted in Le respect des morts and De la chaire au trône, two plays written by Amadou Koné. The objective of this study is to examine the role played by the principal character in each of the plays. With the application of the thematic, the sociological, the psychoanalytical and the ecocritical methods, the study observes that Koné puts on stage the leadership style employed by the protagonists. N'douba, in Le respect des morts, opts for persuasion and dialogue to convince his people to accept the construction of the dam proposed by the colonial authorities. As a result of his approach, N'douba succeeds in changing the destiny of his people because at the end, the dam which symbolizes development and progress is constructed and the villagers moved to a new modern village. The Prince, in De la chaire au trône, elected to power to bring development couldn't save his soul nor that of his community. He woefully fails because he opted for violence to elongate his tenure and dies at the end without actualizing his dreams and good intentions. Keywords : leadership, dialogue, development, violence.
